Saul Friedlander's concept of Holocaust uniqueness and the question of identity: From Cosmopolitanism to Zionist
בהדרכת ד"ר עמוס גולדברג
My work focuses on the historiography of Holocaust uniqueness, with a special emphasis and analysis on historian Saul Friedlander's work. How has the concept of Holocaust uniqueness developed within Holocaust studies, and how did Saul Friedlander's personal perspective of it develop? Understanding the rich context in which Friedlander writes, allows us to understand both parallels and contradictions within this historiography; does his work show analogies or contradictions, especially in relation to his identity. What sets him apart? My work will argue that despite and because of his identity as a cosmopolitan Jew, he holds on to the concept of Holocaust uniqueness, even though this invokes contradictions.
